Monopotassium phosphate (MKP) is one of the highest-analysis PK fertilizers available, with a guaranteed 52% phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅) and 34% potassium oxide (K₂O), and no nitrogen. Because it is fully water-soluble and nearly free of chloride, sodium and heavy metals, it is widely used in fertigation, drip irrigation and foliar spraying of fruit, vegetable and cash crops.

Typical dilution and application rates

Application rates depend on crop, growth stage and soil conditions, so the values below are orientation ranges that must be verified locally:

  • Foliar spray: generally 0.2%–0.3% solution (2–3 g per liter of water).
  • Fertigation / drip irrigation: commonly 1–5 kg per hectare per application, adjusted to the irrigation program.
  • Fruit trees and vegetables in the fruit-expansion stage usually receive the higher end of the range in split applications.

Solubility and how fast MKP dissolves

MKP is highly soluble — on the order of 220 g per liter of water at 20 °C — and dissolves quickly when stirred. The crystal form is slightly slower to dissolve than the fine powder (100–150 mesh) grade, which is also suitable for unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) spraying. Always add MKP to water, not water to the dry product.

Mixing and compatibility

MKP solutions are mildly acidic (a 1% solution is around pH 4.5), which helps keep trace elements available in the tank. For mixing with other products:

  • MKP generally mixes well with most water-soluble fertilizers and chelated trace elements.
  • Avoid mixing with strongly alkaline materials or concentrated calcium solutions, which can cause precipitation.
  • Run a jar test before large-scale tank mixing, and never mix concentrated stock solutions of calcium and phosphate together.

FAQ

  • What does 0-52-34 mean? The NPK value stands for 0% nitrogen, 52% P₂O₅ and 34% K₂O.
  • Can MKP be used in drip irrigation? Yes, it is fully water-soluble and a standard choice for fertigation and drip systems.
  • Is MKP safe to mix with calcium nitrate? No — concentrated calcium and phosphate solutions precipitate. Use separate tanks or alternate applications.
  • What grade should I buy? Industrial grade 99% crystal or a fine powder grade for drone spraying, depending on your application method.
